Play chess online against the computer or choose two-player mode for a match with a friend. Select a piece to see its legal moves, then plan your way toward checkmate. The game supports standard chess rules, including castling, en passant, and pawn promotion.

How to play chess

1. Choose Play computer to challenge the computer as White, or Two players to share the board. White moves first.
2. Select a piece to show its legal destinations, then select a highlighted square to move.
3. Protect your king while developing your pieces and looking for opportunities to capture.
4. Use castling to protect your king, capture en passant when the rule applies, and promote a pawn that reaches the far rank.
5. Win by checkmating the opposing king. The game also recognizes stalemate and other draws.

Use Undo move to take back a move. Your game and selected mode are saved in this browser.
