Honey Extractor Frame Balancer

Before spinning, arrange frames to reduce the mass imbalance around the extractor shaft. This free calculator compares frame weights and positions with two-dimensional vector mathematics, then gives you clear instructions for moving the frames.

How to use the frame balancer

  1. Select the number of evenly spaced positions in your extractor.
  2. Enter each frame’s weight, or explicitly mark a position as empty.
  3. Keep any frames that cannot move locked in their current positions.
  4. If needed, add individual frame radii or require opposite loaded pairs in the advanced options.
  5. Select Find Best Balance, then follow the original-position-to-new-position instructions.

The calculator preserves each frame’s original identity. Its arrangement table always describes a frame by where it started, so a direction such as “Move the frame currently in Position 2 to Position 6” is unambiguous.

How static frame balance is calculated

Each frame is represented by its mass multiplied by the radial distance of its centre of mass from the shaft. The calculator resolves each frame’s contribution into horizontal and vertical components according to its angular position. It then finds the arrangement with the smallest resultant vector magnitude. For frames at a common radius, the result is reported as equivalent residual unbalanced mass; when radii differ, it is reported as mass-radius imbalance.

Opposite equal-weight pairs can cancel each other, but pairing alone is not guaranteed to give the best arrangement for a whole set of frames. The calculator searches all permissible arrangements for practical configurations. Larger searches use a deterministic local search and are clearly marked as not proven globally optimal.

Practical considerations and safety

Balance depends on more than scale weight. Uneven honey distribution changes a frame’s centre of mass; frame dimensions and distance from the shaft matter too. Tangential and radial extractors may load frames differently, and frames lose mass as honey drains. Static balance does not guarantee dynamic balance or vibration-free operation.

Always follow the extractor manufacturer’s loading pattern and operating instructions. Secure the lid and start at low speed. Stop the extractor if it vibrates unusually.
